When setting up network equipment, you have to deal with some parameters that are not very familiar to a beginner, for example, with the addresses of the default gateway. This option is often used to specify a computer that provides Internet access, so knowing the default gateway settings will be useful to many novice users.

Instructions

Step 1

First, configure the network equipment itself, usually a router. To do this, connect your equipment to the network card via the LAN port. After that, open any Internet browser and enter the IP of your router in the address bar (for example, 192.168.1.1, for more details, see the instructions for your equipment). After that, a login form will appear, in which you must enter your username and password (most often it is admin). Then, after examining the page interface, find the WAN option and activate it.

Step 2

Next, go to the "Default Gateway" section (in English it may sound like Server Address). Enter the required gateway value in the text box. Here, if necessary, you can delve into the settings of DNS servers, which are closely related to the gateway. To do this, uncheck the box next to the "Get DNS automatically" and enter the required addresses. Save the changes by clicking the Save or Apply button, and then restart your network equipment for the settings to take effect. It is also possible to configure the default gateway in the computer itself. To do this, click the "Start" button and go to "Control Panel". In the window that opens, find the "Network and Internet" section and open it.

Step 3

Then click on the item called Network and Sharing Center. In this subsection, select the "Manage network connections" option, after opening which immediately go to "Network connections". Right-click the adapter for which you want to configure the default gateway. Select "Properties" in the window that opens and go to the "Network" tab. Find the "Components Used by This Connection" section. Click Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP / IPv6) or Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4). Select "Properties" and click on the "Obtain an IP address automatically" or "Use the following IP address" option.
