Determining the serial number or IP address of a server is a fairly common administrative task. There are various ways to solve the selected problem, but methods using standard operating system capabilities are always preferable.
Instructions
Step 1
Use the built-in specialized utility WMI - Windows Management Instrumentation - to perform the procedure for determining the server serial number on a computer running a Windows operating system. To do this, log on to the system with an account with administrator rights and open the OS Windows main menu by clicking the "Start" button (for OS Windows).
Step 2
Go to Run and enter cmd in the Open box to launch the Command Prompt tool.
Step 3
Confirm the run command by clicking OK and enter the value wmic bios get serialnumber in the text box of the Windows command interpreter.
Step 4
Press the Enter soft key to confirm the server serial number prompt, or use the wmic csproduct get vendor value to identify the hardware manufacturer.
Step 5
Confirm execution of the definition command by pressing the Enter softkey, or select the syntax wmic csproduct get name to find out the server model in use.
Step 6
Press the Enter softkey to confirm the execution of the request and exit the Command Prompt tool (for Windows OS).
Step 7
Use the specialized utility dmidecode to perform the procedure for determining the server serial number on computers running the Linux family. To do this, log in with an account with superuser privileges and enter dmidecode -t system in the console text box (for OS Linux).
Step 8
Choose the syntax sudo dmidecode -t system on Debian-based Linux operating systems (Ubuntu), or enter su dmidecode -t system into the command line text box when using an RPM system (Fedora, RedHat).
