Instructions

Step 1

Since configuring a router for a user is a very difficult task that can lead to undesirable consequences, use programs to manage traffic in local networks. Among the current software offerings are a couple of products: BWMeter and Tmeter. The functions of these programs are similar, but the second option has the advantage - the application is completely free.

Step 2

To limit the connection speed, use filtering by IP address, which is individual for each machine. To search for all IPs in order to assign some filters, run the Tmeter program. In the main window, open the following items in sequence: "Configuration" and "Filter set".

Step 3

Then click the Edit button to perform a full edit of the settings file. Create a new settings file: to do this, click the "Add" button, go to "Settings" and check the box next to the line "Master filter". Then check the box "Enable rate limiting" and set the desired value, for example, 1 Mbps.

Step 4

In addition to the value of the speed of access to the Internet, this window has a number of other options that also allow you to impose a restriction on the traffic consumed. As an example, it is worth specifying the option "A certain amount of consumed traffic", i.e. when a certain amount is reached, access is automatically blocked.

Step 5

For all the usefulness of this program, do not forget about its disadvantages. For example, network administration implies constant control and monitoring of what is happening on the computers of the entire network. But if the administrator's computer is faulty or de-energized, then control over the network will be completely violated. Therefore, many professionals advise to configure the router and only then use special software.
