First, let's define the technical characteristics of the icon. The standard icon has dimensions of 16 by 16 pixels, it can be colored (256 colors) or monochrome and weighs no more than 300 kb. Users often add a site shortcut to their desktop, and such a standard icon looks, to put it mildly, miserable. Therefore, create and place icons of different sizes from 16 to 32 and even 48 pixels.

Choose a suitable image for your future icon. It will be the hallmark of your site. Therefore, choose rare, different from many other pictures. It is good if the picture will overlap with the theme of your site. You can also make icons for individual pages of the site. Usually this is a slightly modified icon of the main page of the site.

It's easy to create an icon yourself. The easiest way is through a special site, which will turn the image you uploaded into an icon: it will fit to the required size. Most of these sites will also offer you to create large desktop site icons. Load a pre-selected picture in a special window and click "create an icon" or something similar (each service has its own names of operations, but the essence is the same).

A good icon builder site will show you how your icon will look in the browser bar and on the desktop. Evaluate the result: how harmonious your icon looks, whether the details are blurred, how it fits into the overall concept of your site. If something does not suit you, edit, crop the resulting icon or upload another picture.
Step 5
To add an icon to your site, first download and save it on your computer. Then place it in the root directory of the site: www or public_html. These folders are preferred, although you can place them in others. Now your site will acquire its own face and will stand out in the bulk of sites. Users will appreciate your efforts and will be happy to visit the site.
