At the bottom of the screen, you will see an empty field labeled "Paste any URL". Copy your link there and click on the "Shorten" button located on the right.

Copy the shortened link that appears in the box at the bottom of the screen. The shortened links look completely different from your original. For example, bit.ly/96isYB. You can easily insert such an encoded link into the Twitter message field without fear of exceeding the character limit.
