A server's DNS record defines the relationship between its IP address and domain name. If you only know the IP address, then from any computer connected to the Internet, you can determine whether the machine with this address has a DNS record, and if so, which one.
Instructions
Step 1
Enter the IP address into the address bar of your browser. If it turns out that the machine with this address is used to host the site, it will be redirected to that site. Please note that some ISPs block traffic to websites based on their IP addresses.
Step 2
If it turns out that your ISP is blocking access to sites by directly entering IP addresses, go to any gateway that provides compression for mobile browsing, such as Skweezer or Google Wireless Translator. Enter the IP address in the URL field.
Step 3
Use the whois utility. If you are using the Linux operating system, then this utility is most likely installed on your machine, but for Windows it will have to be downloaded and installed. Enter the following command at the command prompt:
whois aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd, where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the IP address.
Soon, the screen will display information about the IP address, including information about its DNS record.
Step 4
The whois utility is not available for most of the operating systems used in mobile phones. In addition, requests generated by it may be blocked by some providers. In this case, go to the site listed at the end of the article. Enter the IP address and click the Go button.
Step 5
Sometimes several sites correspond to the same IP address. In this case, after entering the IP-address into the browser, you will be redirected to one of the sites, or to the main page of the provider's site.
Step 6
The opposite situation is also possible: several IP addresses correspond to one domain name. Most often, owners of large sites resort to this technique in order to evenly distribute the load on the servers. In this case, use the traceroute (Linux) or tracert (Windows) command with a domain name argument. At the very beginning of the displayed text, you will see a list of IP addresses assigned to the domain name. If you use the corresponding built-in Busybox command interpreter instead of a separate traceroute program, you will not be able to find out the list of addresses assigned to the same domain name.
