The two founders of the popular microblogging service Twitter have created a new portal, Medium.com, to take blogging to the next level. The emerging online diary platform has a lot in common with Twitter, but, according to the creators, it is not yet equipped with all the features that are planned. Nevertheless, it already decides the main function - the promotion of the highest quality content.
The new blogging system does not imply that each poster has its own page - posts by different authors are placed, depending on their subject, in several general collections. Within these collections, news are ranked according to their popularity and novelty. The degree of popularity is determined by readers - they can “like” the post they like, and this vote will be taken into account on a ten-point scale in determining the rating of the view / reward ratio. Such a system excludes the institution of "followers" of "Twitter" and generally makes it unnecessary to special measures to artificially raise the popularity of messages.
Among the thematic collections available to authors, there are, for example, This Happen To Me - "It happened to me", When I Was a Kid - "When I was a child", etc. A similar system has long been operating in the social network popular mainly in the West Pinterest. However, in addition to general collections, Medium users have the opportunity to create their own, private collections, which will not include messages from other authors.
Twitter and Medium have a common authorization system - the user of the new platform does not need to create a separate account on the portal that appears. Therefore, the new network can, to a certain extent, be regarded as an additional service to the Twitter microblogs. For example, if your new message does not fit into the 140-character limitation of the old engine, you can upload it to the new portal, where there is no such limitation. And for those who are generally uncomfortable living in such a tight format and always want to illustrate their news with photos, Medium will become the main blogging service. True, while Medium.com operates in a limited mode - everyone can read the messages, but the authors of posts are selected through a system of personal invitations.
