Almost any computer will work to set up your own home Internet gateway. The only prerequisite is the presence of several slots for connecting network cables or Wi-Fi devices.

Step 1
When you need to provide a local network between a laptop and a stationary computer with Internet access, I recommend using a Wi-Fi adapter. This will keep the laptop mobile. Get the Wi-Fi adapter you like. It can be either an external USB device or an internal adapter plugged into a PCI slot.
Step 2
Connect the purchased equipment to your computer. Install the software required to configure the Wi-Fi adapter. Turn on this device. Now open the Network and Sharing Center (Windows 7). Select the "Manage Wireless Networks" menu.
Step 3
Now click the Add button. Set the name of the future network. Select the type of security from the options offered by the system. In this case, you can use the Open type, because you still cannot connect more than one device to the adapter. If you have chosen a different type of security, then enter the password.
Step 4
Open the settings of the created wireless network. Click the "Properties" button after selecting the "Internet Protocol TCP / IPv4" item. Enter a static IP value of 165.167.176.1.
Step 5
Now turn on your mobile computer. Connect to a wireless network created with a Wi-Fi adapter. Proceed to setting up this connection. Set the following values for the "Internet Protocol TCP / IP" menu:
- IP address - 165.167.176.2
- Subnet mask - system selectable
- The main gateway - 165.167.176.1
- The preferred DNS server is 165.167.176.1.
Step 6
Now open the properties of your internet connection on your desktop computer. Find and open the Access menu. Activate Internet Sharing by checking the box next to the corresponding item. Enter your wireless network. Activate your internet connection.
