Quite often there is a situation when in one apartment there is not one, but two or even more computers. And, of course, each of the users wants to have access to the worldwide information network and its capabilities. Therefore, the question of the distribution of the Internet arises.

It is necessary

  • - patch cord cable,
  • - switch

Instructions

Step 1

Find out what type of internet connection you are using. The most popular one today is ADSL access. A telephone line and a special device - an ADSL modem are used. An obligatory feature is that a thin cable goes from the modem to the telephone socket. Another popular type of connection is in-house LANs or other dedicated cabling options. It looks like this: a cable enters the apartment, which connects to the network card of the computer.

Step 2

Determine which modem you have. Modems can be single-port or multi-port. It is very easy to distinguish them by the number of connectors on the rear panel. See if there are empty spaces next to the cable that connects the modem to your computer. If there is, then your modem is multiport, you can connect a second computer with a regular network cable. If there is only one connector, this means that you have a single-port device, you will need not only a cable, but also a switch. A switch, or network hub, connects computers into a local network and therefore can distribute the Internet to two computers.

Step 3

Buy the cables and devices you need to connect. If you are using a single-port ADSL modem or a network connection over a cable, buy a minimum 4-port switch and a patch cord of the length you need. You will also need a short patch cord, for example, 25 centimeters long. If your modem has free connectors, buy only a patch cord. Determine the length of the cable by the distance between the computers. Take into account the peculiarities of the apartment so that you can lay the cable in a convenient way, for example, under a skirting board. You can buy all this at any computer store.

Step 4

Connect the patch cord to the network card of the second computer. Plug the other end of the cable into a free port on your ADSL modem. If the modem is single-port or there is none at all, plug the cable from the computer into the purchased switch. You can use any switch connector - they are all equal. Be sure to plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet and remember to press the power button.

Step 5

Now pull out the network cable through which the "first" computer receives the Internet from the network card and plug it into the switch. With another patch cord, connect the computer and one of the switch connectors. As a result, both of your computers will be connected to a network hub, and the "Internet", that is, a signal from a modem or an intra-house local network, will be connected to it.

Step 6

Configure network addresses if necessary. Most often this is not required. For example, a multiport modem will automatically distribute the Internet to two computers as soon as the cables are connected. The switch will also provide access for all PCs on its ports, if no changes have been made to the operating system settings. Restart both computers for Windows to apply the new network settings and you can use.
