To a greater or lesser extent, but almost every site uses scripts in its work. Even sites that do not provide visitors with an interactive experience and do not have any visual or sound effects on the pages use scripts at the stage of assembling the pages themselves on the server. Therefore, when it becomes necessary to make some functional changes to your site, then most often you have to deal with scripts. Let's take a look at how to install scripts on a website.

Instructions

Step 1

Typically, scripts are distributed in a zipped form. There is a technical possibility to unpack the archives directly on the server where your site is located, but it is still better to do this on your computer. Archives with scripts usually contain not only the files necessary for their work, but also instructions, and not infrequently and simply advertising materials that are completely unnecessary on your server. The script files are likely to have a js or php extension - other scripting languages are rare today. They sometimes require library files, cascading styles, images, etc. to work and display them correctly. Installation and configuration instructions are usually contained in a text file. Be sure to read it - only the author can give the correct installation sequence and features of using his products.

Step 2

The unpacked and cleaned files should be moved to the server of your site. This can be done using a special program that transfers files using the FTP protocol (File Transfer Protocol). If you do not have it installed, then you can download it on the network - there are many of them, both paid and free. They are called FTP clients, for example, FlashFXP, FileZilla, Cute FTP, WS FTP, Smart FTP, etc. But, of course, installing, configuring and mastering the program takes time, no matter how easy it is to use. There is another possibility - in the control panel of the site on your hosting, most likely, there is a built-in file manager. It allows you to upload files directly through your browser. If you do not have your own hosting, but you use some kind of content management system, then there should also be such a file manager. It remains only to find where, exactly on your system, it is located - unfortunately, there is no uniform standard on the control panel. If you use a file manager, then, as a rule, no additional actions with files after downloading will be required. And when downloading via FTP-client it may be necessary to additionally "set user rights". If the installed script must change something in the files on the server, then the files should be set to read attribute = 777, and executable scripts = 755 or 644. Attributes may differ depending on the settings of your server - usually these details are placed in the "Frequently Asked Questions" section (FAQ), you should find out them there, or in the technical support of your hosting. In various FTP clients, the operation of changing file attributes is implemented in different ways - perhaps in your program this function will be called CHMOD (abbreviation for CHange MODe).

Step 3

The scripts uploaded to the server must be connected to your site. The actions required to connect each specific script are very different - here you simply cannot do without instructions. The best option is if the script manufacturer has provided for the automatic installation of the downloaded kit. In this case, you only need to type in the browser the address of the file, the name of which is indicated in the instructions and follow the instructions that this script file will issue. If there are no instructions, you can search for the installation file in the kit yourself - usually they are called install.php or setup.php. But in the absence of instructions for scripts unknown to you, it is still better to find a replacement for them.
