Terminal Server is used when you want users to be able to run applications, files, and other network resources directly from their own computers. To start the terminal server, you must install the appropriate role on the computer and go through the activation procedure.

Step 1
Before you install a terminal server, take some preparations. Reset the operating system settings, i.e. set them as default. If the computer is a local network server, then it should not act as a domain controller. Also, no user programs should be installed on the PC. They need to be configured only after starting the terminal server.
Step 2
Go to the main menu "Start" and select "Control Panel". Open the "Administration" section and start the "Manage this Server" snap-in. In the dialog box that opens, select the "Add or Remove Role" tab and select the "Terminal Server" item.
Step 3
Review the information on the Summary of Selected Options page. If the information suits your needs, then proceed to the next step in configuring the terminal server. Before doing this, it is recommended that you close all other programs so that the computer does not restart during installation. Run the Terminal Server Installation Wizard, wait for the process to complete, and then restart your computer.
Step 4
Click on the Configure Your Server log button in the window that appears after restarting the PC to view information about all the changes made by the Terminal Server Installation Wizard. After that, run Windows update and activate the Security Configuration Wizard.
Step 5
Configure a terminal license server, without which the connection period on the local network with the server will be limited to 120 days. To perform this procedure, you need to go to the "Control Panel" section, select the "Add or Remove Programs" snap-in and go to the "Windows Components" tab. Activate Terminal Server Licensing. After the licensing process is complete, the terminal server is ready for use.
