One of the oldest data transfer protocols in computer TCP networks is FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Despite its venerable age, FTP is one of the main data transfer protocols today. By running an FTP server on your machine, you can easily and securely provide access to selected files and directories to external network users. Step 1

Open the control panel. To do this, click on the "Start" button located on the taskbar, select the "Settings" section in the menu that appears, and then click on the "Control Panel" item.

Open Windows Admin Center. In the control panel, find the "Administration" shortcut. Double click on it with the left mouse button.

Step 3

Open the IIS Settings Management snap-in. In the Administrative Tools window, find the "Internet Information Services" shortcut. Click on it with the left mouse button twice.

Step 4

Find and select the item in the server management section hierarchy corresponding to the ftp node. In the right pane of the Internet Information Services window, expand (Local Computer) and FTP Sites in sequence. Highlight Default FTP Site.

Step 5

Start creating a new virtual directory for the FTP server. Click on the element selected in the previous step with the right mouse button. A context menu will appear. Highlight Create. Click on the item "Virtual directory …". The "New Virtual Directory Wizard" window will open.

Step 6

Create a virtual directory. On the first page of the wizard, click Next. On the second page, enter the directory alias, and on the third, enter the path to the physical directory on disk. On the fourth page, select access options. Click the Next and Finish buttons. The created virtual directory appears in the folder hierarchy of the FTP site.

Step 7

Begin the process of setting permissions to access the directory from the external network. Right click on the item corresponding to the new virtual directory. From the menu, select All Tasks and Permission Wizard.

Step 8

On the first page of the wizard, click Next. On the second page, check the "Select template-based security settings" radio button. On the next page, in the "Script" list, select the "Public FTP Site" line. On the fourth page, check the "Change all directory and file permissions (preferred)" checkbox. Click the Next button twice. Click the Finish button.
