What is ping?
Sometimes, in online games, the user's character responds to the player's actions with a delay, or the picture on the screen starts to twitch, or the game is interrupted due to some kind of error. All this indicates that the user has a high ping. What is it and what does it depend on?
It is better to explain what ping is with an example. When a user starts the Internet and an online game, it automatically sends some information (packets) to the remote server of the game or to other computers. Ping is the time it takes for a certain piece of information (packet) to get to the server or to another computer and a response will come from it. Thus, it turns out that the lower the user's ping, the better it will be for himself, since the time spent on processing the sent and received information is minimized. When you have a high ping, then, accordingly, the game starts to slow down, the picture on the screen takes much longer to update, or the game character takes longer to fulfill user requests.
What does ping depend on?
What determines ping in online games? There are several different opinions on this matter. Firstly, it is believed that it depends directly on the speed of the Internet used. On the one hand, such a statement is true, but on the other, it is not. For example, if the Internet speed is not enough, then, naturally, packets will be transmitted and received much longer, respectively, the game will slow down. On the other hand, if the internet speed is sufficient for the game, then the ping can still be high. It may also depend on the quality and stability of the connection. Secondly, the ping depends on the distance of the server. Perhaps this is the most correct statement, since if the server is in close proximity to you, then the response time, that is, the ping, will be even less than 5ms. If the server is located, for example, in the United States of America, and you are in Russia, then the ping will reach 300 ms and even more. And finally, the ping depends on the congestion of the Internet channel. If you are running a torrent or simply downloading some program from the Internet, various network programs are running, and at the same time, you are playing an online game, then all this will consume your traffic, and the ping in the game will be quite large …
In order to find out the ping, you need to open the command line (in Windows 2000, XP, 7 - this can be done through the "Start" menu.
