Webalta is such an intrusive search engine that appears in the browser in a completely unexpected way without the user's knowledge. So, users from time to time notice that their start page has changed to start.webalta.ru and the Webalta system is now set as the default search. We are not happy with this state of affairs, so let's figure out how to get rid of Webalta.
We study the situation
Getting rid of Webalta simply by changing the home page in your browser will not work. When you restart your browser, you will see the familiar start.webalta.ru again. We need to remove the intrusive Webalta permanently from our computer.
The secret of this bad search engine being in your browsers is that the data about it is entered into the registry of the operating system. This data must be deleted. Click Start, then type regedit in the search bar. Press Enter on your keyboard, this action will open the Windows registry.
Find in the top menu the item "Edit", then in the drop-down list "Find". In the search box that opens, enter the word webalta and click the "Find Next" button. When the search is completed, you will see a list with records that contain the given word. As you might guess, these records should be deleted. Click on the entry with the right mouse button and select "Delete" from the drop-down menu. You can also select an entry by left-clicking and then pressing Delete on your keyboard.
We start active actions
It is best to scan the registry several times, since almost no one succeeded in deleting all entries the first time. When the search does not show any results, you can proceed to the next step of our operation to remove Webalta from your computer. It is also worth noting that any changes you make to the registry are at your own risk. This is a very dangerous procedure and in the event of an error, the operating system may need to be repaired.
When you're done cleaning the registry, change the homepage in your browser as you normally would:
- for Google Chrome: click the menu button on the top right panel, then "Settings", "Appearance", check the box next to "Show the" Home page "button, then" Change ";
- for Opera: "Tools", then "Options", select "General" and at the very end "Home";
- for Internet Explorer: select "Tools", then "Internet Options", now go to "General" and finally "Home".
We make a recheck
Another place to look to get rid of Webalta is the properties of shortcuts in all browsers. For example, right-click on the shortcut of the Google Chrome browser and select Properties from the context menu. Find the "Shortcut" tab and then the "Object" item and see if there is anything similar to this: "C: / Program Files (x86) Google / Chrome / Application / chrome.exe" https:// start.webalta.ru ".
If so, delete "https://start.webalta.ru" and leave the first part of the entry. After that, you can click "Ok". If you have several browsers on your PC, then check their properties in the same way.
You can also check the list of installed programs, often Webalta installs its program there too. In Control Panel, click Programs and Features (In XP, this is Add or Remove Programs). Look there for something called Webalta. If detected, immediately remove the suspicious object. Go through the registry again.
You see how sometimes it is difficult to get rid of intrusive programs. Webalta is not the only one who uses such "black" promotion methods.
