Hypertext links, linking pages of sites into a single network, make possible the existence of the Internet in its present form. And in today's life there is no phenomenon more changeable than the worldwide network. This makes it necessary to quite often bring links in line with network changes. We will consider in more detail how to change the link on your website.
Instructions
Step 1
Links, like all other elements of the site page, are rendered by the browser based on the information sent to it by the server. This information is a set of instructions in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) that describe the types, appearance, and location of each element of a web page. Programmers call HTML instructions "tags." A simple link is created by the browser when it reads the following tag from the page code: Text link Here is the opening link tag, and - the closing tag. Additional information is placed in the opening tag - the "attributes" of this tag. The href attribute contains the URL of the page (or other file) to which the request should be sent if the visitor clicks on the link. If the requested page or file is located in the same server folder (or subfolder), then it is not necessary to specify the full address - its name or path to the subfolder is enough. Such addresses are called "relative", and complete addresses are called "absolute". A link with an absolute address might look like this: Text link
Step 2
That is, to change the link, you should open the html-code of the page on the server, find in it the tag of the hyperlink that needs to be replaced, and change the content of the href attribute.
If the file containing the page code is at your disposal, then you can open and edit it with any text editor, for example, a standard Notepad. If you use a content management system, then you can edit pages directly in your browser. To do this, you need to find the page editor in the site control panel and open the desired page in it.
Such a page editor can have a visual editing mode - it is sometimes called WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get - "what you see is what you get"). In this case, you will not need to edit the html code. The page in such an editor looks the same as on the site, it is enough to find the necessary link on it, select it and, by clicking the corresponding button on the editor panel, change the link address. The location of this button depends on the type of visual editor your control system is using - there are quite a few.
Step 3
In addition to the address, the link tag has other attributes that allow you to change the behavior and appearance of the link. Most often, it becomes necessary to change the target attribute - it indicates in which window the new page should be loaded. There are only four options: _self - the page should be loaded into the same window or frame. Each part of the browser window is called "frames" if the page divides it into several parts; _parent - if the page where the link is located was itself loaded from another window (or frame), then it has a "parent" window. The _parent value indicates that the page to which the link points should be loaded into the same parent window; _top - a new page should be loaded into the same window, destroying any frames (if any); _ blank - indicates that to follow this link you need to open a separate window; For example: Link will open in a new window
