A situation that will require the transfer of information from a domain controller arises sooner or later on any computer. This requires a backup domain controller. It is better to create it in advance. The information will be stored on it until the moment when the base controller fails. In this case, the backup will help restore the data.
It is necessary
Computer, primary domain controller, backup domain controller
Instructions
Step 1
Create a backup domain controller. Start the dcpromo wizard on the network server. It will create a controller in the existing domain. This will deploy the Active Directory (AD) directory service to the secondary server.
Step 2
Start the DNS server installation process. AD stores the zone and information about all settings. There is no need to change the settings. All records are automatically replicated to the standby controller. It will take a while, please wait. After the end of the operation, the computer can be restarted.
Step 3
When the copy is created, decide on the addresses. Specify the IP address of the underlying domain controller as the address of the primary DNS server.
Step 4
Check if the backup controller is working. To do this, create a user account on any of the servers. When it is created, it will be displayed on the backup device. At first it will be in a disabled state, and after a few minutes it will activate. This is a sign for activating the backup controller.
Step 5
All domain controllers should be included in the regular backup cycle. The only exception is controllers located in the same room. In this case, you only need to back up one of them.
Step 6
Make a backup at least once every 60 days. Copies should not be older than this period. If you restore a backup controller that was created more than 60 days ago, you might find inconsistencies in the information it contains. For this reason, the backup system prevents the restoration of copies that are older than 60 days.
Step 7
Back up the domain controller every 2-3 days. This is the best option. In this mode, no failures will occur during domain controller recovery.
