When Internet access is lost, it is important to determine exactly where the failure occurred. Otherwise, you can spend a long time trying to eliminate a non-existent malfunction, while in fact the cause of the problem is completely different.

Instructions

Step 1

Take a look at the network card. Does the LED light up on it when the cable is connected? If not, then either there is a break in the cable itself, or the equipment to which it is connected is turned off or defective.

Step 2

In case the opposite end of the cable is connected to a router located in your home, check if someone has turned it off or pulled the cable out of it. Check the health of the network card itself, as well as the socket of the router. If the latter is faulty, move the cable to an adjacent one.

Step 3

If the opposite end of the cable is connected to equipment located at the provider, call support and report the incident. Specialists will find the place of the breakage and eliminate it, or repair the equipment. Or the consultant will immediately inform you that the equipment is currently undergoing preventive maintenance, and will name the approximate time for its completion.

Step 4

If you have just replaced the network card, and there is no Internet access on the new one, despite the fact that the LED is on, it may be that the provider keeps a record of MAC addresses. Provide support for the new MAC address and access will be resumed shortly.

Step 5

The LED can light up, despite the lack of communication, and if the equipment to which the cable is connected is frozen. If using DHCP, restart your computer, and then check if it got an IP address automatically. If not, either reboot your home router or, if not, report the problem to your ISP. After fixing the problem, restart your computer again.

Step 6

If the problem persists, use the ping command to test the router or gateway. A situation is possible when the equipment responds, but still it is impossible to go to any site. This means that the malfunction is located further away. See if your ADSL modem is properly connected to the telephone network. And if yours is not ADSL, but LAN, check if the provider's website is loading. If it loads, but the rest of the sites do not, it is possible that preventive maintenance is also being carried out (find out about this by phone), or you simply forgot to pay the subscription fee.

Step 7

When accessing via GPRS / EDGE / 3G, the restoration of the connection often occurs when the previous one is forced to break. In Linux or Windows, use the KPPP program or the standard modem software for this, respectively. For Symbian, use the Connection Manager utility that comes with this OS.
