Routers and similar devices are used to create local area networks with access to the Internet. This allows you to combine computers into the desired groups, giving them the ability to communicate with external resources.

Necessary

  • - network cables;
  • - router.

Instructions

Step 1

Choose a suitable router. Pay attention to the number of LAN ports with which this equipment is endowed. If you do not want to purchase an additional network hub, then make sure that their number exceeds the number of computers on the network. Also check the type of connector used to connect to the provider's server. Typically this is either a WAN port for a network cable or a DSL connector for a telephone line connection.

Step 2

Install the router in an accessible location. Connect this equipment to AC power. Select the computer from which you will configure the device and connect it using a twisted pair cable to an available LAN port of the router. Connect the Internet access cable to the WAN (DSL) connector of your network equipment and turn on the device.

Step 3

Turn on your computer and open your internet browser. To access the router's settings, enter its address into the browser and press the Enter key. Open the Internet Setup Wizard or WAN menu. Fill in the required fields in the same way as you do when setting up a single computer to connect to the Internet. Activate the Firewall, NAT and DHCP functions if the device software allows it.

Step 4

Save the settings of this menu by pressing the corresponding button. Reboot the router if this operation is not done automatically. Some models of network devices can be rebooted by disconnecting them from the AC mains.

Step 5

Reopen the web-based interface of the router. Go to the Status menu and check if your internet connection is active. Check if your computer has network access. Connect the rest of the PCs to the LAN ports of the router. Set a password to access device settings to prevent unwanted changes.
