XML - eXtensible Markup Language - means "extensible markup language", and this standard was created in order to introduce uniform rules for writing data to text files. This way of storing information is not designed for large amounts of data. It is used, for example, to exchange data between several programs or to store persistent information displayed on web pages.
Instructions
Step 1
The XML file is not executable; it only contains structured data in text form, which are used by some applications in the course of their work. For example, sometimes such a file is needed when installing programs, plugins for them, additional "skins", etc. In this case, the XML file must be placed in the folder where the application should look for it during the installation process or when preparing data output on the screen. Find out the address of this folder from the program description or installation instructions. If the XML file is used by any scripts (for example, in the content management system), you can see the path to it in the text of the script source code. Sometimes a web application that cannot find the XML file will give an error message - it may also contain the full path to the missing component.
Step 2
Once you know the location of the file, copy it there, and then run the application. This will be the process of installing the XML file.
Step 3
Files of this type can also be used as a replacement for regular website pages. In this case, for installation, you should either register the appropriate directives in the server settings, or use another language - XSL (eXtensible Stylesheet Language). It is designed to set the rules for outputting data contained in an XML file to the browser. If the file that you need to install provides the ability to output to the browser, this file must be more than one - the package must also include a component with the xsl extension. If not, open the XML file in any text editor, in the line that begins with <? Xml-stylesheet, read the name of the missing file and find it.
Step 4
Place both files on the server of your site. On the line mentioned in the previous step, specify the location of the auxiliary XSL file - it may need to be stored in some subfolder. In this case, either create the desired directory or correct the address. The correct placement of these two files will be the installation of the XML file to display its contents in the browser window.
