Step 1
Register on a torrent tracker with a large number of permanent active users. Choosing an insufficiently popular resource will lead to underestimated Internet speed test results. It is best to use the torrent tracker rutracker.org to determine the quality of the provider's services, where more than ten million users are registered and there is no data transfer rate limit.
Step 2
Pick up a file with a lot of distributors or seeders. It does not have to be some kind of novelty from the world of cinema or the gaming industry, the download of which may violate the manufacturer's copyright. There are many films, games, programs, musical compositions that have remained extremely popular for many years and even decades. After choosing the appropriate category, you can, for convenience, enable the sorting of torrents by the number of seeders, so it will be easier to find the most suitable file for measuring Internet speed.
Step 3
Download the torrent to your hard drive and open it with µTorrent. Determine the path for downloading the file, uncheck the "launch torrent" box and confirm your decision. Then open the properties of the required torrent by right-clicking on it and selecting the appropriate item from the drop-down menu. Here, deselect the items "exchange peers" and "search for local peers", and then close the properties.
Step 4
Start the torrent download. In a few seconds, a number will appear in the "Receive" column, indicating the download speed of the file, which almost exactly corresponds to the current maximum Internet speed. This number may be slightly lower than expected, since up to a tenth of the speed is spent on special traffic needed to send requests between the torrent tracker's servers. Thus, if the file is downloaded at a speed approximately equal to ninety percent of the one declared by the provider, then the connection speed is fully consistent with the tariff.
