Website usability is an important component of any large Internet project. Usually, designers do this work in order to increase site traffic, because once having entered the site and showing sympathy for its design, the user will definitely visit it again.

Instructions

Step 1

Follow design

All elements should be as simple as possible and combined with each other - choose a design, a color scheme and strictly follow it. Don't forget about design trends and color combinations - no one will be attracted by a site with a swamp blue color scheme with yellow text on it. If the design of your site is flat, and you want to place 3D text, they say, "looks great" - think 100 times - perhaps this is not as great as you think. It is advisable to use large text in combination with images.

Step 2

Minimize

It is not necessary to fill all the free space with pictures or text - this scares off users, creates a feeling of loss and uncertainty. For news sites, you can add a "cat" - a short text that is shown on the main page (full text - under the link "read more"). Less information means a nicer look. Agree, it is not pleasant to read official documents (for example, laws) - due to the fact that they are too long. Microsoft did more original - presented the "Privacy Policy" in the form of a regular article (link - in the "Sources", just below the article) on its website. Briefly and clearly.

Step 3

Combine

Combine similar sections of your site into one large one, by clicking on which all sections from this heading are opened - use subcategories, in other words. For example, the categories Phone, Computer, Server, and Programming can be grouped under the heading IT. This makes it easier for the user to find what he is looking for.

Step 4

Add hints

If a section of your site speaks for itself too vaguely or has a highly specialized topic, add a hint to the link to it. The hint should not be stretched over 15 sentences - two or three are enough. Don't overuse hints - this violates the second rule of this article. You should not use enticing texts and mislead the user using allegories, metaphors and other techniques. Something between strict and conversational style should come out.

Step 5

Advertising has its place

Don't make 25 paid links per square centimeter of your site. Avoid overly flashy ads, do not use a sharp animation of 2-4 frames. Ad should be added somewhere on the edge, or static (no animation) between the materials. But make sure that it does not stand out too much - if placed between materials, you can make it very stretched - for example, 600x80 pixels. Remember, the user came for content, not ads. Explain to him that using AdBlock is not good, and it steals your hard-earned money (do not say it too harshly - "You are robbing me." An excellent example is the TechMedia article (the link is attached in the "sources"), which tells about all the disadvantages of this program on the part of the Habrahabr developers and asks to enter into their position.
