When working on the Internet, the user is sometimes faced with a situation of uncontrolled traffic consumption. To understand which application uses the Internet, you should use the capabilities of the operating system or special programs.
Instructions
Step 1
If the computer actively interacts with the network while it is idle without updating the operating system files or anti-virus databases, you need to find a program that uses traffic.
Step 2
First, try to find this program using the tools of the OS itself. Open Command Prompt: Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt. Enter the command netstat -aon, press Enter. You will see a list of current connections. In the "Status" column, the currently active connections will be marked as Established.
Step 3
The next column - PID - lists the process identifiers. Knowing the identifier will help you understand which program is using a given connection. In the same window, type and execute the tasklist command, you will see a list of running processes. The process name is immediately followed by an identifier number. Find in this column the number of the identifier you are interested in, to the left of it there will be the name of the program process. In the event that the name of the process does not tell you anything, type it in a search engine, and you will receive all the necessary information about it.
Step 4
To find out which specific program is using traffic, start shutting down suspicious active processes that are connected to the network one by one. You can stop processes in the Task Manager (Ctrl + alt="Image" + Del) or directly in the command line using the command: taskkill / pid 1234, where 1234 is the identifier of the process that needs to be closed (it will be different for you). If after closing the process the traffic decreases, then you have found the required program. If not, close the next one, etc.
Step 5
You can exercise greater control over your traffic with BWmeter. Find it on the Internet, download and run it, then open the Details tab. Find the Control panel, click the Start button. The program window will display information on all ip-addresses to which the computer connects.
Step 6
Use AnVir Task Manager to monitor network activity. It allows you to see all network connections and find programs using them. With this utility, you can find in the registry and launch keys of any programs you are interested in and, if necessary, delete them.
