Instructions

Step 1

If you are connecting to an intra-house local area network, install a network card in the computer, if this has not been done before. In Windows operating systems up to and including XP, it may be necessary to install the driver for such a card. In Linux, as well as in Windows Vista and above, the network card will work immediately after installation.

Step 2

The cable provided by the ISP, just plug into the network card. Configure the computer with the IP address indicated in the documents received from the provider. Tell the support service the MAC address of the network card (if required), and then start using the Internet.

Step 3

If you are connecting via ADSL, first disconnect all devices from the telephone line. Connect it to the input jack of a special device called a splitter. Connect two cables to the splitter itself. One of them, connected to the low-frequency output, lead to telephones connected in parallel. Connect the other one, connected to the high-frequency output, to the input of the modem.

Step 4

The modem itself, depending on its model, connect to the computer via the USB or Ethernet interface. In the second case, you will need a network card. Install PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet) software on your computer. Enter the login and password provided by the provider.

Step 5

It is much more convenient to use special modems with built-in routers to connect to ADSL. In this case, connect the telephone cables in the same way as in the previous case. Install network cards in computers (there can be up to four of them) and connect them to a modem router. Do not install any additional software on the machines.

Step 6

On all computers, enable automatic acquisition of a network address using the DHCP standard. The router will undertake all the work to ensure interaction with the provider's equipment via the PPPoE protocol. The main thing when setting up is to enter a username and password.
