Host (from English host - host receiving guests) is a device or program on a network or other connection, built on the principle of a client-server, in which it is a server. The term host reflects the role of a device or program as a center for storing data or managing the services that the host provides to its clients. Depending on the context of use, the concept of host takes slightly different and more precise meanings.

Instructions

Step 1

In the specification of the TCP / IP network protocols on which the Internet is based, a host is a computer or other device that has a network channel that can both transmit data and receive. Almost any computer on the Internet falls under this definition. In this context, the host plays the role of a network node.

Step 2

World Wide Web sites are based on a client-server network architecture and are a widespread example of it. In this case, the host is the site's web server, which finds and sends the pages it requests to the client. The client that sends requests and receives the result from the web server is the browser of the site visitor.

Step 3

Hosts are also called powerful computers that are located inside the local network of some enterprises or institutions. These computers perform most of the work of computation, modeling, and other resource-intensive operations. Clients that send the necessary instructions to the host and receive the results are called workstations.

Step 4

USB devices have a host controller. This is a board, usually located inside the computer, to which other USB devices can be connected. In this case, the computer itself, equipped with such a board for USB devices, for example, connected webcams, USB keyboards or flash drives, is the host.

Step 5

Just like in the TCP / IP protocol specification, in site visit statistics, host means a network node. The uniqueness of a network node is determined by its IP address. Therefore, host statistics reflect the number of visitors over a certain period of time by unique IP addresses. For example, if for the whole day one visitor with one IP address came to the site throughout the entire session and viewed 3 pages on the site, the statistics will display 3 views and 1 host per day. If during the day the site was visited by 2 users, and one of them came in in the morning from one IP address, and in the evening from another, 3 hosts will be displayed in the statistics.
