One of the most frequently repeated operations in the daily activities of a webmaster is putting in order the hyperlinks on the pages of the site. Some links need to be added, others removed, and still others should be changed. Since without the first operation (adding links) the rest will disappear by themselves, let's take a closer look at the procedure for adding links to a page on your site.

Instructions

Step 1

In the first step, you need to generate an insert link. Inserting a link into a page in the programming language means adding a tag with the appropriate attributes to the HTML source of the page. HTML (HyperText Markup Language - "hypertext markup language") is a browser-based command language for displaying all page elements, "tags" are these very commands, and "attributes" are explanatory information for these commands. The command (tag) by which the browser displays a hyperlink on the page consists of opening and closing parts, between which the link text, or a picture, or some other element is placed. A simple example of a text link: Link text Required explanatory information (attribute) is placed in the opening tag. The name of this attribute is "href" and it contains the URL of the link. Here is a short address ("relative"). It is used if the document being referenced is located in the same folder as the document containing this link. And the full ("absolute") address looks like this: Link text Other additional information may contain, for example, an instruction to open the link in a new window. The corresponding attribute is called target: Link text The tag can contain a large number of attributes, for example, to the two above, you can add an instruction to search robots not to index this link: Link text Based on all the information listed, you can generate a hyperlink code to insert into the page and go to the next step.

Step 2

It remains to insert the prepared html-code of the link into the source code of the page. To do this, the easiest way is to use your site management system - it cannot but have a page editor. Go to it and open the required page, and then switch the editor to the html-code editing mode (the button for this will be on the editor panel). If you are not using the content management system, then download and open the file with the page source code in a regular text editor. The easiest way to download is to use the hosting company's control panel file manager. It allows you to upload files directly through your browser. But you can also do this using the FTP-protocol (File Transfer Protocol - "file transfer protocol") using a special program - FTP-client. You can find and download a lot of paid and free options for such programs (for example, FlashFXP, Cute FTP, WS FTP, etc.).

Step 3

Now find the right place in the code to insert the link and add the prepared code there. If you are using the online editor, then just save the changes. If you are editing the page in a text editor, then save and upload to the server in the same way that you used for downloading. This completes the link insertion procedure.
