With the advent of WiFi, the Internet has firmly entered our life, because now you can be online not only from your home PC, but also from a laptop or smartphone. However, sometimes, taking advantage of the free public network in a cafe or metro, we can become a victim of scammers.
Instructions
Step 1
Turn off the "Share" option for your files.
Before connecting to a public WiFi network, be sure to check if document sharing is turned off on your device. To close the sharing of your files and prohibit the detection of the gadget by other users of this network, you need to go to the Control Panel, then select the "Network and Internet" item, and then uncheck all the options.
Step 2
Connect VPN protocol.
VPN stands for "Virtual Private Network". Using a VPN allows you to conduct all your Internet traffic through a special secure network, thereby limiting the possibility of unauthorized access.
Step 3
Turn off the option to automatically connect to the WiFi network.
Check if your device automatically connects to a familiar WiFi network. The fact is that attackers can easily use this loophole to get hold of classified information on your phone.
Step 4
Check the name of WiFi.
Do not be in a hurry to rejoice if in the next McDonald's you find a free, password-protected Wi-Fi without a time limit. It is possible that this public network was created by scammers. Therefore, always check with employees for the exact name of the WiFi connection being distributed.
Step 5
Use SSL extensions.
SSL protocol allows the user to exchange encoded information with sites. Naturally, such information is very difficult to decipher and use with ill intentions.
Step 6
Protect passwords.
Try not to use the same password on two accounts. If you are having difficulty remembering passwords, you can use special programs - password managers.
Step 7
Check the functionality of the firewall and anti-virus programs.
Although firewalls and programs are not capable of providing you with 100% security, you should always download the latest database updates. Usually, they can be used to avoid major fraud.
