If your Internet is not unlimited, but your home phone is such, you can transfer files within the city at low speed for free. This will require conventional analog modems.

Instructions

Step 1

Purchase analog modems (devices of ADSL, 3G, WiMax, etc. standards are not suitable). Under no circumstances should you purchase so-called soft-modems that assign signal processing to the computer's central processor. New analog modems can be very expensive, so look for used ones at online auctions. Modems must be equipped with the interfaces available on your computer.

Step 2

Connect modems to a computer at each end of the communication line. Connect them directly to a telephone line (no ADSL splitter). If splitters are available, connect analog modems in parallel with phones, not ADSL modems.

Step 3

On each of the machines, run the terminal emulation program. In Linux it is Minicom, in DOS it is the built-in terminal emulator of the DOS Navgator program, in Windows it is Hyper Terminal. If two computers use different terminal programs, make sure they support the same file transfer protocol, such as ZMODEM.

Step 4

Select the same transmission parameters in terminal programs: speed, number of bits, parity. Call one modem to another: ATDP phone_number. If the call failed, modify this command as follows: ATDT P phone_number (there should be no spaces between the letter P (Latin) and the phone number).

Step 5

Type text on the keyboard of one machine and make sure it immediately appears on the screen of another. Make sure that data can flow in both directions this way.

Step 6

On one machine, enable the file reception mode using the ZMODEM protocol or similar. On the other, start a file transfer using the same protocol. When the file is accepted, save it. Remember that an analog modem, unlike a modern ADSL device, makes the subscriber line busy when transmitting data. It does not affect the operation of existing ADSL modems.
