Each device in the computer has a special code assigned to it by the manufacturer. It is called the device instance code or device id and consists of a unique manufacturer and device model number. With it, you can find out the exact name of the equipment that the computer could not identify and select drivers for it.

Step 1
Right-click on the "Computer" icon in Windows 7 or "My Computer" in Windows XP. In the context menu that appears, click on the "Properties" item.

The System Properties window appears on the screen. Open the "Hardware" tab in it and click on the "Device Manager" button. It contains a list of all the equipment installed in the computer, provides information about its state, properties, installed drivers, and it is possible to change the settings of each of the devices.

Hardware in Device Manager is divided into groups. Select the group of the required device and open it by double-clicking the left mouse button. Right-click on the desired device. Select the "Properties" item in the appeared context menu.

Open the "Details" tab in the appeared window of properties of the selected equipment. From the drop-down list located on the tab, select "Device Instance Code". In the large field below the drop-down list, you will get the desired device id.

There are databases on the Internet that store the unique codes of manufacturers and their equipment. If you were looking for an instance code to identify an unknown device, then you need to search for the name using one of these databases.

To do this, open the website www.pcidatabase.com.
Step 7
In the Vendor Search field, copy the device manufacturer's code to identify the company that produced the equipment. Click the Search button. The device manufacturer code is contained in the first 4 digits, separated by a subscript from the VEN device id fragment.
Step 8
Copy the model code into the Device Search field to identify the name, type, and version of a specific device. The device model code is in the first 4 digits after the subscript following DEV.
Step 9
Click the Search button. From the search results, select the one that matches the manufacturer you identified.
