The ping function is used to check access to web resources by sending packets of known sizes to the selected host and determining the response time. Disabling this feature can be useful for gamers to reduce potential lag times.
Instructions
Step 1
Call the main system menu by clicking the "Start" button and go to the "Control Panel" item. Expand the link "Windows Firewall" and go to the "Advanced" tab of the dialog box that opens. Click the ICMP Settings button and uncheck the Allow incoming echo request line. Save your changes by clicking OK.
Step 2
Return to the main Start menu and go to the Run dialog. Type mmc in the "Open" line and confirm the launch of the utility by clicking the OK button. Open the File menu of the upper service panel of the application window and select the Add / Remove Snap-in item. Add the IP Security and Policy Management snap-in and apply the check box in the Local computer line. Confirm the execution of the selected action by clicking the Close button, and save the changes made by clicking the OK button.
Step 3
Call the context menu of the IP Security Policies item in the left pane of the console by right-clicking and selecting the Manage IP Filter Lists and Filter Actions item. Expand the All ICMP Traffic link in the dialog box that opens and go to the Manage Filter Actions tab in the next dialog box.
Step 4
Skip the first screen of the wizard by clicking Next and enter Block in the Filter Action Name of the new dialog box. Save your changes by clicking Next and complete the wizard. This can be done by clicking the Close button in the last window.
Step 5
Call the context menu of the IP Security Policies element of the mmc console again by right-clicking and specifying the Create IP Security Policy command. Skip the first wizard that appears by clicking Next and type Block Ping in the Name field of the next dialog. Confirm the selected action by clicking Next, and uncheck the box next to Activate the default responce rule in a new window. Save your changes by clicking Next and apply the check box in the Edit Properties line of the final wizard window. Apply the changes by clicking Finish and use the Add command in the new IPSec policy window.
Step 6
Confirm the execution of the selected action by clicking the Next button, and apply the checkbox in the All network connections line. Save the changes by clicking the Next button and mark the checkbox in the All ICMP Traffic line. Click Next again and apply the check box in the Block line of the new dialog box. Save the changes made by clicking Next, and call the context menu of the created policy by right-clicking. Specify the Assign command.
